LinkMedic Command-Line Tool

CLI TOOL free
Not rated yet Be the first

Crawl a page and get a Markdown report of every broken, redirected or slow link.

A standalone Python 3 command-line tool for checking the links on a page before you publish it — or after you inherited a forum full of them.

• Crawls a live URL or a local HTML file.
• HEAD first, falls back to GET, so servers that reject HEAD are still checked honestly.
• Reports status codes, redirects and failures in a readable Markdown table.
• Pure standard library, no API keys, nothing to install beyond Python 3.

Usage:

python3 linkmedic.py https://your-board.example/ --report link_report.md

Run it in CI or before a migration and you get a list you can actually work through.

Install it

This is a command-line Python 3 tool - it does not install into a forum.
1. You need Python 3.8 or newer. No pip packages: it uses the standard library only.
2. Unzip it anywhere and run it:
python3 linkmedic.py https://your-board.example/ --report link_report.md
3. Point it at a live URL or a local HTML file (examples/page.html is included).
4. Read the Markdown report: every broken, redirected or failing link with its status code.

Questions people ask

Does it touch my forum or my database?

Neither. It is a standalone script that reads pages over HTTP and writes a report file.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Python 3 is enough; Pillow is optional and only used by the imgcrush step.

How do I check the file I downloaded?

Every release page prints a SHA-256 checksum. Hash the archive locally and compare — if the two differ, the download is damaged, not the release.

How are updates delivered?

Each version is its own release on this page with a changelog, and the older archive stays available. Install the new one over the old one; your settings and data stay where they are.

v1.0.1 latest 25 Oct 2026 17.1 KB 1 1.0.1 - three fixes found by running 1.0 against our own hardened host.

- Fixed: 1.0 crashed with a traceback on hosts that answer HTTP 406 to Python's default
User-Agent (Mod_Security and friends). It now sends DF-LinkMedic/1.0.1 and prints a clear
one-line message for 403 / 404 / 406 / DNS failures.
- Fixed: a link whose HEAD request is refused with 406 was listed as broken. 403, 405 and 406
are now retried as GET before a link is judged.
- Fixed: network failures were printed as "0"; they are now described in words.
- New: the report states the source, the run time, the tool version and a final status-code
breakdown, plus a healthy count. New --timeout flag (per link, default 8s).
- Standard library only, unchanged. Same flags as 1.0.
v1.0.0 24 Oct 2026 13.9 KB 0 - First packaged release.
- HEAD-with-GET-fallback checking.
- Markdown health report output.
