A one-file dark-mode switch for phpBB 3.2/3.3: paste before </head>, purge cache, done.

Some boards need a dark mode and do not need a new style to get one. This is a single HTML snippet that adds a light/dark toggle to the header and remembers the member's choice.

• Works on phpBB 3.2 and 3.3 without a style rebuild.
• Paste into overall_header.html before </head>, then purge the cache — that is the whole install.
• Remembers the choice locally, so the page does not flash the wrong theme on the next click.
• No core file edits and no database changes: revert is deleting the snippet and purging again.

Ship it with your own accent colours by editing the CSS custom properties in the file.

Install it

This is a phpBB header snippet, not a plugin - there is no installer, by design.
1. Open styles/<your_style>/template/overall_header.html in your phpBB 3.2/3.3 board.
2. Paste the contents of darkmode-1.0.0.html just before </head>.
3. Admin CP -> General -> Purge the cache.
4. Reload the board: the light/dark toggle is in the header and remembers the choice.
To remove it: delete the pasted block and purge the cache again. No core files, no database changes.

Questions people ask

Does it create database tables?

No. It reads what the platform already stores, so there is nothing to migrate or clean up.

Does it edit core phpBB files?

No. It is a proper extension that adds its markup through a template event — disable it and the board is exactly as it was.

How do I check the file I downloaded?

Every release page prints a SHA-256 checksum. Hash the archive locally and compare — if the two differ, the download is damaged, not the release.

How are updates delivered?

Each version is its own release on this page with a changelog, and the older archive stays available. Install the new one over the old one; your settings and data stay where they are.
