A floating pill that appears once you scroll, and takes you back to the top in one tap.

A small, single-purpose extension: one button, fixed to the bottom-right corner, that stays out of the way until someone has scrolled a reasonable distance down a page.

What it gives you:

• A gold-edged pill labelled "Top" that fades into view after 340 pixels of scrolling and disappears again at the top.
• Smooth scrolling, using the browser's native smooth behaviour — no library, no jQuery, no external request.
• Scroll handling is registered as a passive listener, so it never blocks the page's own scrolling performance.
• One template event file and one small event subscriber. No database changes, no ACP settings, nothing to configure.

Verified before publishing: the extension's file structure matches phpBB's extension format, every PHP file passes a PHP 8.3 syntax check, and the template hook it uses (overall_footer_body_after) exists in stock phpBB 3.3.15 templates.

Requirements

  • phpBB 3.2 or 3.3.
  • PHP 7.4 or newer (all PHP files syntax-checked on PHP 8.3).
  • The stock overall_footer template, so the hook is present.
  • No configuration afterwards — enabling it is the whole install.

Install it

1. Upload the folder dataforums/backtotop into your phpBB ext/ directory, so the path reads ext/dataforums/backtotop.
2. In the Admin Control Panel go to Customise → Manage extensions.
3. Enable DF Floating Back-to-Top Pill and purge the cache.
4. Scroll down any page to see the pill appear.

Questions people ask

Does it load anything from outside my board?

No. The button and its behaviour are entirely local — no external scripts, fonts or requests.

Can I change when the button appears?

Yes, by editing one number in the template file (340 is the scroll distance in pixels). There is no ACP setting.

Does it work on a custom theme?

It attaches to a core template event, so it works on any theme that keeps phpBB's standard footer events.
