Reading List Plugin for WordPress
Lets signed-in members save any entry with one click and read it later from a private list.
The button is a plain form with a nonce - no AJAX, no REST round trip - so it works with JavaScript switched off, behind a page cache and in any theme. Signed-out visitors get a sign-in line instead of a button (or nothing at all, if you blank that line), and an entry that is later unpublished simply disappears from the list.

What's included
- One-click save button on every entry, above the content or wherever you place [df_save_button]
- A private list per member at [df_reading_list], newest first, with the date it was saved
- Works with JavaScript switched off - a plain form POST with a nonce, not AJAX
- Signed-out visitors get a sign-in line, or nothing if you blank it
- Every reader-facing string is editable in the settings, so the button speaks in your voice
- Per-member cap (200 entries by default) so a runaway list cannot grow forever
- No table of its own: one user meta row per member, removed on uninstall

2. Create a page called "Reading list", put [df_reading_list] in it and add that page to your menu.
3. Open Settings > DF Reading List to change the button wording, the list heading and the signed-out line.
4. The button appears above the content on the post types you tick; place [df_save_button] yourself if you would rather choose the spot.
Questions people ask
Do readers need an account?
Yes. A reading list belongs to a person, so it is stored per user. Signed-out visitors see your sign-in line instead of the button.
Does it need JavaScript?
No. The button is a normal form POST carrying a nonce, and the list is ordinary HTML - both were used on the bench with JavaScript available and neither depends on it.
Where do members see their list?
On any page holding [df_reading_list]. Create a page called "Reading list", add the shortcode and put it in your menu.
Can a member see somebody else's list?
No. Every read and write goes through the current user's own ID and the nonce is bound to that entry and that action.
What happens when I delete the plugin?
uninstall.php removes the settings and every member's list, on single sites and on every site of a network.
All releases
| Version | Released | Size | Downloads | Changelog |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| v1.0.3 latest | 25 Oct 2026 | 18.4 KB | 0 | 1.0.3 - Re-verified on WordPress 7.1.3 with PHP 8.4: installed, activated and exercised on a clean bench (front end, settings screen, the plugin's own behaviour) with WP_DEBUG on. No notices, warnings, deprecations or errors. readme.txt now declares Tested up to 7.1.3. Fixed: the bundled version constant still carried the previous release number, so styles enqueued with it kept an out-of-date cache key after an update; header, constant and readme now agree. |
| v1.0.2 | 25 Oct 2026 | 18.7 KB | 0 | Uninstall now clears the `df_rl_page` option row as well. That row was written by an early build that created a list page on activation; nothing reads it any more, but a site that installed that build still had it sitting in the options table after deleting the plugin. Deleting the plugin now leaves no option rows and no user meta behind. No other change, and nothing to do after updating. |
| v1.0.1 | 25 Oct 2026 | 19.1 KB | 0 | Removed the `Update URI` header. WordPress.org's automated scan reads that header as a third-party updater (plugin_updater_detected); updates are served by WordPress.org, so the header has no place in a hosted plugin. No change to how the plugin works. |
| v1.0.0 | 25 Oct 2026 | 18.3 KB | 1 | - First public release. |
